Born in Habersham County, GA, June 27, 1929, he was the son of the late Elbert Barnett and Ora Irene (Carson) Wilson of Clarkesville, GA. His family and friends all knew him as Ron (or Ronnie during his childhood). Ron lived his last three years in Roswell, GA, near his nephew Craig Wilson, prior Ron lived 39 years in Charlotte, NC (his adopted home). There he was an active member of the Levine Senior Center where he enjoyed swimming.
Ron graduated from Georgia State University, and was a member of the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves. During the Korean War he served a tour of active duty as a crewman on the minesweeper, USS Waxbill (AMS-39), operating in Korean waters. He was an active member of the Naval Mine Warfare Association, and Naval Mine Div 113 Association.
Over a period of thirty years, in his spare time, Ron authored a total of six (book length) historical essays on early Southern Appalachian History, three of which have been published in hardback. Copies of all his written works, which includes a Naval narrative, and three volumes of family history are in the History Room at the Charlotte Public Library.
Ron is survived by: niece Lynda Wilson Van Devender, Florence, AL, niece Nancy Wilson Durden (Robert), Hoschton, GA, nephew Tracy Wilson, Lawrenceville, GA, nephew Floyd Wilson, Jr. (Cindy), New Smyrna Beach, FL, nephew Craig Wilson, Roswell, GA, niece Carla Wilson Adams Outlaw (Dennis), Powder Springs, GA, and numerous great nieces, nephews, spouses, et al., in greater Atlanta, GA and New Smyrna Beach, FL.
He is preceded in death by his wife of forty-two years, Sarah (Sally) Ann (Parsons) Wilson, one sister: Birdie, and six brothers: Marvin, Floyd, Dewey, Grady, Lee and Bennie.
A visitation with friends and family will take place on Friday, June 9, 2023 from 10:00- 11:00AM at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Mint Hill, NC 28227. Graveside Services will follow at 11:30AM at Sunset Memory Gardens 8901 Lawyers Road Mint Hill, NC 28227 with Rev. Jason Hughes officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by members of the US Navy.
