Born October 18, 1936, in Washington, DC, Al was the son of the late Arthur A. Selby and Jessie Nicholson Selby, of Cabin John, MD, Charlotte, and Deltona, FL. He grew up in Winston-Salem and Raleigh, NC, and has lived in Charlotte and Mint Hill since 1948. Al attended Piedmont Jr. High, and graduated from Central High School in 1954. He later graduated from UNC-CH in 1958.
Al married Nancy Marilyn Lee on November 27, 1958, in Norwood, NC.
Al began his career in Government at the US Postal Service during High School. Upon graduation from UNC-CH, he became a Claims Representative with Social Security Administration. He became a Special Agent with the Criminal Investigation Division of Internal Revenue Service in 1961, where he worked in North Carolina until his retirement in 1986. Al worked briefly as a financial private investigator before joining the Charlotte Police Department and setting up its Asset Forfeiture Unit as a part of the Vice and Narcotics Bureau where he served 10 years until his second retirement in 1999. He worked on the 2000 US Census.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, Al is survived by his children, Robert Alvin Selby and wife, Jennifer, of Wingate, NC, and Patricia LeeAnne Selby Webb and husband, Tom, of Midlothian, VA; grandchildren, Alexis Selby Walker and husband, Grant Walker, Avery Selby and Amber Selby, Rusty Webb and wife, Krista, and Amanda Webb; and great-grandchildren, Kade Russell Webb and Parker Jane Walker.
A Lifelong Elder and Elder Emeritus at Third Presbyterian Church, Al served as Chairman of the Building Committee, Finance Committee, and other special projects (Member since 1965.) He was Clerk of Session at least 19 years. Al loved his church and its people as much as family.
Al was a Lifelong member of the Boy Scouts of America. He was registered in BSA for 75 years (as of 12/31/21) and was an Eagle Scout and a Silver Beaver. He was registered with Boy Scout Troop 158 for 32 years as Scoutmaster and in other positions. Al served on 21 Wood Badge Courses, twice as Course Director/Scoutmaster. He served as Quartermaster on 10 Junior Leader Training Courses and attended summer camp with boys 10 years at Camp Steere and Camp Grimes. He received the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. Al attended 7 National Jamborees and 2 World Jamborees. He was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.
Al was a Regional Director of the Association of Former Special Agents of the IRS for many years, and Historian. He was a 32 degree Mason in Excelsior Lodge # 261, and was also a member of Scottish Rite, and Oasis Shrine.
Al devoted his entire life to his God, his Family, the Boy Scouts of America, and Third Presbyterian Church.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm until 1:50 pm Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Third Presbyterian Church, 4019 Central Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the church sanctuary. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
