Amelia was born and raised in Mint Hill and graduated from Bain School in 1947 with 12 other classmates. She attended Presbyterian Junior College and afterwards worked for 30 years at Southern Bell, retiring in 1977.
She was very especially involved with her church, Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, where she was a lifetime member. She sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, was Historian and Deacon Emeritus, involved in The Women of the church, serving as Circle Chair, secretary, President and many other leadership roles. She received the Honorary Life Membership in 1967. She was an officer on the Presbyterial Board of Charlotte and was the recipient of an Outstanding Older Adult Award in 2016. She was instrumental in the publication of Rev. Russell Kerr’s book, ‘Presbyterian Gathering on Clear Creek', and even had her hands in the flowers and plants around the church grounds.
She served as Regent, Vice Regent, Treasurer, Chaplain and Historian during her 31 years as a charter member of Clear Creek Militia Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a charter member of the Mint Hill Historical Society. She was a volunteer at Presbyterian Hospital and was seen pushing the magazine cart around for many years while her husband volunteered in the emergency room.
She loved to watch birds in her backyard, helped any cat or dog in need, and even adopted a truly loved ‘rescue' cat, Gracie. She never passed up a bargain and was often spotted at yard sales in the community adding to her unique collections.
Amelia is preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Howard L. Ford.
She is survived by her sister, Jeannine Robinson Mayberry; her nephew, Dale L. Mayberry (Brenda); and her nieces: Neecie Mayberry Herndon (Andy), Cindy Ford, Cathy Ford, and Carol Ford Carriker (Scott); and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A Homegoing Service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC. A visitation will be held prior from 10:00 to 10:45 am. Burial will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Road, Mint Hill, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Humane Society of Charlotte or her beloved church, Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill.
