Born July 9th 1949 in Charlotte NC, he was a son of the late Daniel Parks Kerley and Ruth Price Kerley; brother to Daniel Kerley and Susan Tillman; husband to Phyllis Kerley; father to Chase Kerley and Dane Kerley; and “Grandpa” to Anna and Price Kerley.
Following graduation from West Mecklenburg, Alan furthered his education at the North Carolina State University where he earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering with dreams of working at NASA when space exploration was at its peak. Alan began his career at Newport News Shipyard working on the nuclear components of the USS Nimitz where over time he worked his way back to Charlotte to lead Day and Zimmerman’s office.
As the government contracts and travel from his wife and sons wore on, Alan turned his career towards real estate where he worked for Berkshire Hathaway up until his passing.
The joy of Alan’s life was his family and his thirst for knowledge and experience. He often said he would have liked to be a teacher but in his professional and familial downtimes - that is exactly what he did. Alan took time to learn and pass on lessons whenever interest was met. He was a teacher by heart and an engineer by mind.
Alan had many hobbies including music, cycling, tennis, building and taking anything apart, NC State Wolfpack, and reading just about anything, but none more important than spending time with friends and family telling stories and sharing experiences.
A service to celebrate Alan's life will be held at 11am Saturday morning, April 30, 2022 at McEwen Funeral Services - Pineville, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte, NC 28210. The family will host friends and family directly after the memorial service at 6535 Sharon Hill Road - home to Chase, Ashley, Anna, and Price Kerley.
