I only just met Al through email shortly before he was gone. I truly appreciated learning more about my family and him sending me pictures I would have never seen. Al was my Dad's cousin. I am so sad for Susie and family...take care.

Al and I worked together for about 20 years meeting almost daily.We often talked about being at war together with issues relating to deregulation of deposit interest,attacks from money market funds paying 21% interest,mutual funds ,brokerage companies and other trying to move deposits etc.
There was no template for us to follow so we made it up as we faced the challenges.Luckily  the decisions were the right ones and by the time this was over ,First Union was one of the best and safest banks in the country.Al's development and implementation of strategies to grow deposits wisely and execute untested strategies made him a critical and valuable part of the success First Union enjoyed.
Al had a great mind,a positive attitude, and a good feel for  tomorrow's challenges.It probably wasn't possible for significant contributors like Al and others who gave 100%+ to First Union for so many years  to receive the praise , accolades,or recognition they deserved for great accomplishment; but Susie,you need to know that Al was at his best when the challenges were the toughest. 
I am proud to have known and worked with AL and I know his many accomplishments wouldn't have happened without  the strong and loyal support of a great wingman!
May God bless and watch over you and your family in these difficult times.

I was at First Union for most of the Al Sale years. He truly was one of a kind and made many many positive impacts on the company and on employees. He always had a smile on his face and brought fun to any situation. My thoughts are with his family.

I will always remeber Mr. Sale from my time I worked at First Union. He was a true gentleman. I was never an executive at First Union but Mr. Sale knew my name and always made a point to speak to me and shake my hand. That was one way he made us all feel important. I am really sorry to hear the news about Al.   Al hired me into First Union and is the reason I moved from New York to Charlotte.  He was a wonderful, supportive and creative boss, full of life, unique opinions and ideas.  I had occasion to meet Al a few times in recent years and he was still the same.  I had not seen him in more than a year and this news comes as a shock.
