Chapin - Funeral services for Otis Spires, Jr., 81, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2021 at Chapin United Methodist Church with interment to follow at 3:00 p.m. in Long Cane Cemetery in Abbeville, SC. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 29, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. Funeral Services will be viewable via livestream on the Caughman- Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel Facebook page. Mr. Spires was born December 13, 1939 in Columbia, SC and passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021. He was the son of the late Carl Otis Spires, Sr. and Nannie Lee Taylor.
Otis was a member of the Chapin United Methodist Church where he was actively involved in the choir, Sunday school and Bible studies. After graduating Brookland-Cayce High School, Otis served in the United States Navy. Following that, he started his career at Allied Chemical where he became a mechanic until he retired in 1999 with over 30 years of service. He continued working part time delivering parts for Multi-Parts and Classic Ford until 2014. He also was actively involved in the Chapin Lions Club where he served as President for several years. In his spare time, Otis enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, attending plays in Abbeville, Broadway shows in Columbia and many sporting events at the University of South Carolina. Otis, affectionately known as “Big O”, will be remembered for the thousands of biscuits he made and for the pound cakes he brought to family and church gatherings.
He is survived by his daughter, Rena McDonald (Dale Weatherford) of Sandy Run; son, Michael Spires (Brenna) of Chapin; granddaughter, Payton Spires and grandson, Griffin Spires of Chapin; sister, Linda S. Etheridge of West Columbia and brother, William “Bill” Spires (Erlinda) of Nevada. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Lib” Spires; brother, David Ansel Spires and brother-in-law, James Etheridge.
