Barry was born in Dalton, MN on February 5, 1948 to Lindal and Clara Johnson. Around 1950 they moved to Bloomington, MN where his father built their new home. Barry graduated from Bloomington, MN High School in 1966 and joined the Navy a few years later. He spent time in Vietnam and DaNang as a Radio Operator receiving 5 medals when he was honorably discharged on December 11, 1972.
Barry was married to Sharon on October 20, 1973 in New Ulm, MN and would be celebrating their 50th anniversary this October. They settled in Blaine, MN until they moved to Chandler, AZ in 2009. They had one daughter, Sarah, who he is very proud of. Barry's first job was with National Steel where he worked for 20 years. A new company took over and he was hired for the same position. He refused the offer as the family had a 6 week motorhome trip planned to the Pacific Coast Highway and they would not give him the time off. When he got back from vacation his same position was still available so he went back. He later worked for the USPS as a mail carrier for 20 years through rain, sleet and snow. He would always have treats for the dogs on his route and loved visiting with the people.
Barry was an avid cyclist, it was nothing for him to bike 20 - 30 miles a day. In fact he often rode his bike to work and back, 20 miles each way. He really enjoyed ping pong and billiards, and was very good at both. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and bird watching. He was always helpful, kind and had a good sense of humor. He loved to travel to destinations such as the Caribbean, Rhine River, Alaska and the Panama Canal. Barry and Sharon visited all of the Mexican hot spots and all 50 states.
Barry is survived by his wife, Sharon (Kahle) Johnson; daughter Sarah Burson (Todd); grandchildren Kate, 16 and Kahle, 14 all of Chandler, AZ; siblings Linda (James) Dollimer and Wesley David Johnson in MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lindal and Clara Johnson; brothers Richard and Harvey Johnson. He will be missed.
Special thank you to Sarah, Todd, Linda Brayden and Jan Johnson.
