Joseph Albert Martinez Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph Albert Martinez Sr. announce his passing on Jan. 19, 2023, at the age of 71. A native of New Orleans, Joe was born on May 6, 1951, and resided in St. Bernard Parish for many years.

Joe was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen Gritter Martinez; the father of Susan M. Crawford, Joseph Martinez Jr. (Tara), and Miranda Martinez (Justin); and grandfather of Mikayla and Mika Crawford.

Joe also is survived by his siblings Juanita Martinez (the late Duke Duchman), Diane Bodenheimer (Melvin), Gerard Martinez, the late Marie Martinez and the late Linda Cox; brothers-and sisters-in-law, John Gritter (Virginia), Emily Christensen (Gordon), Gregory Gritter Sr. (Lorraine), Laura Tamor (Kevin), Mary Jo James (Warren Sr.), Don Gritter (Regina), Gary Gritter (Glenda), and Joey Gritter (Kim); and a host of nieces and nephews as well as many other family members and friends. Joe also was preceded in death by his parents, the late Miriam Hymel Martinez and Joseph Martinez.

A plumber by trade, Joe was a longtime employee of Methodist Hospital in eastern New Orleans prior to Hurricane Katrina.

Family and friends are invited to honor Joe’s memory on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. VIRTUE STREET, in Chalmette. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. A small graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM in Joe’s memory in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
