Roland Smith MacNichol, of Essex CT, died on November 24, 2018 of age-related causes. Roland (Roly) was born October 20, 1925 in Toledo OH, to Emma Smith and George P. MacNichol Jr. He graduated from Brooks School, Yale University, and completed the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business. During the Second World War, he served as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps. In 1950, he married Sally Randolph Carter of Cincinnati OH. They began their life together in San Francisco, then moved to Darien CT, before settling in Perrysburg OH for Roly’s long and successful career as an executive at Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company. Roly and Sally lived in Perrysburg for 29 years, where they raised their five children. Following his retirement, he divided his time between Lyme CT, and his beloved Stanley ID. Roly was a devoted husband. He loved riding the mountain trails in Idaho, slurping oysters at Grand Central Station, fishing and hunting with his friends and family, and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be forever loved and missed by all. Roly is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sally Carter MacNichol; his children, Sally N. MacNichol, Roland S. MacNichol Jr. (Terri), D. Carter MacNichol (Jennifer), and Caroline R. MacNichol; nine grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Douglas, his grandson Neil, his brother George P. MacNichol III, and his sister Carol M. Orser. Services will be held on Saturday, December 1 at 2:00pm at The First Congregational Church of Old Lyme, CT.
