Yuan-Huai Simon Tsuo (左元淮), born July 9th, 1948 passed away at 7:20 pm on July 23rd, 2015. He passed from this earth peacefully and surrounded by loved ones. In his final hours of leaving this earth, his family celebrated his life going through photographs and sharing stories of his life as they wished him a peaceful transition. During this celebration, they found a poem that Simon originally wrote to his loving wife Anne. The poem seemed very fitting of how they all feel about him:
“With you…I’ve known true happiness along life’s busy way,
With you…I’ve found how love can grow still deeper day by day…
With you…I’ve learned what sharing means through joys and troubles too…
With you…I know I’ll be content each day my whole life through!”
Simon Tsuo
Simon set an example with his life through his bravery, strong work ethic, and selfless giving. His great smile and sense of humor made everyone feel warm and welcome in his presence.
Simon was the oldest son of Peng Cheng Tsuo (左鵬程) and Er Feng Ha (哈爾芬). His mother passed at a young age and Simon dutifully helped raise his younger siblings Joyce Tsuo (左元鸞), Mei Tsuo (左元美), and York Tsuo (左元沛). All his siblings continue to look up to their eldest brother.
With his eyes set on creating a better life for his soon to be wife Anne Li Tsuo (李安) and family, he bravely immigrated to the US from Taiwan in 1972 after graduating from Fu-Jen Catholic University. With only a few hundred dollars to his name he pursued his PhD in Physics at Yeshiva University. In the US, he and his wife moved from New York, Virginia, California, and eventually settled in Colorado.
In 1979, Simon and Anne had their first son, Lee Kirjohn Tsuo (左克中) and in 1981 had their second son, Leo Kirtie Tsuo (左克太). Both sons looked up to their father’s strong work ethic, moral character, and outlook on taking life seriously but not so seriously to never enjoy it. Simon was known to his family for his many phrases, from which there were no boundary to the source and often came up with his own. He used phrases as an instruction book to teach his sons about life, character, morals, and motivation and these phrases continue to lead his sons’ in their growth.
“Seize the time. Live now, make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”
Cpt. Jean Luc Picard
Simon led a life of strong work ethics, unyielding honesty, and selfless giving. He will be remembered as a legend and pioneer in the solar industry. He worked for nearly 20 years at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and is most well know for the founding of Motech Solar in Taiwan. Not only did he help give birth to the solar electric industry in Taiwan, but also credited for helping to spur the growth of the solar industry into China which has enabled the cost reductions necessary to make solar a mainstream source of energy worldwide. The impact of this has led to generation of hundreds of thousands of jobs.
His legacy will live on through how we remember him. The family invites all that he has touched to share their stories of Simon, no matter how short or long, no matter how mundane or complex, so that everyone can continue to be inspired by his life and so his family, friends, and colleagues can forever remember him.
