He was born on December 22, 1940 in Memphis, Tennessee to Lucy Mildred Jones Smith and Sidney Rutland Smith. He grew up in Memphis and moved to Clarksdale, Mississippi in the 10th grade. Graduated from high school in Clarksdale and went to Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas for one year, and then transferred to University of Mississippi where he earned an undergraduate degree in Banking and Finance May 1963.
After graduation from college, Sidney volunteered for the Army in September 1963. Sidney was assigned to the Pentagon for three years. While at the Pentagon, he went back to school at Georgetown University and got a major in Accounting.
He met Beverly in the cafeteria line at Ole Miss and they were married in Memphis February 1965.
When he left the Army in September 1966, he stayed in the Virginia/Washington, DC area and got his CPA from the State of Virginia.
After working with a CPA firm in Washington, DC, he took a position as an IRS Agent in Virginia. Over the course of 18 years, he served in various IRS offices in Atlanta, Georgia, Kansas City, Kansas, St. Louis, Missouri, and finally Denver, Colorado, where he served as the Chief of Examination Division for Denver District. He joined the Colorado Society of CPA’s and became an instructor for CPE classes. He served on the Board of Directors of the Society of CPAs. In 1985 he started his own individual accounting firm in Littleton/Centennial Area for 26 years.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, three sons, Steve (Debbie), Casey (Laura) and Walt and 5 precious grandchildren, Conner, Natalie, Chloe, Hannah and Noah. He is survived by his brothers, Terry Smith (Charlotte), Robert Smith, by his sisters, Carol Woods and Patricia Bowersox and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Sidney will be held Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Littleton Church of Christ, 6495 S Colorado Blvd, Centennial, CO 80121.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to General Benefits of Patients at the VA Hospital, 1700 N Wheeling Street, Aurora, CO 80045 ATTN: Voluntary Service; Littleton Church of Christ Acts II, or a charity of your choice.
Sidney loved God, his family, his Church, his profession, his hunting, fishing, golf and tennis. We remember him fondly for his smile.
