Mary Kay was born in Denver, Colorado on May 30th, 1942 to her late parents George William Athens and Thelma Lucille (Neff) Gawthrop.
She loved spending time with her family, traveling, gambling, her cats, scrapbooking, lunch outings, getting her hair and nails done at her favorite salon, shopping, decorating for the holidays, reading cookbooks, dark chocolate, and good hair days! She especially enjoyed her weekly movie date with her late husband Danny to whom she was married for 43 years.
In 1997, Mary Kay retired from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center after 30 years of service. She started her career as a Key Punch Operator, and quickly advanced to Data Entry Supervisor. From there, she held increasing responsibilities as Senior Customer Care Coordinator, Information Processing Equipment Specialist, Network Analyst and finally Manager of Computer Training Center. But her favorite title was Grandma.
Mary Kay is survived by her children, Roger (Jan) Miller of Parker, Judy (Jeff) Tapparo of Monument, step-daughter, Becky Fehr-Bruno of Arvada, step-son Michael (Michelle) Fehr of Loveland, sisters Gay (Dan) Garfield of Portland, Oregon, and Margo (Jeff) Johnson of Denver. Mary Kay is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Katie Tapparo, Colton Tapparo, Ryan Miller, Joshua Miller, Preston Boen, Eric Boen, Jordan Bruno, Cassidy Fehr, Austin Fehr and Morgan Fehr, as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel C. Fehr, brothers William “Bill” Athens, Bert (aka Jimmy) Happ, Bill Gunther (aka Lee Traveler). She was also preceded in death by her step-mother Helen Athens, and step-father Robert Gawthrop.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary. Visitation will be held one hour prior, from 12:00-1:00, at the funeral home. Reception to follow burial in Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery.
