Jean Newell died while napping at her assisted living apartment Friday morning on 5/22/2020 at the age of 83 in Westminster, CO.
She was born Jeannie Louise Doyle on 9/22/1936 in Denver, Colorado during the Great Depression.
Her parents were John Francis Doyle and Louise Mae Jahnke.
She was the oldest child and her sister, Deanna, was her only sibling.
She graduated from Denver’s East High School and was soon married to Air Force Airman First Class Franklin L. Newell on 5/23/1955. They were married 47 years before Frank died at age 68.
At age 21 she gave birth to her son, Larry Dale, in 1958 and later her daughter, LeRay Louise, in 1959. Jean & Frank bought their 1st house in Thornton, CO in 1959 and never moved again. They traveled the country during retirement and spent several years wintering and fishing in Port Isabel, Texas where they made numerous “Winter Texan” friends. Jean’s last 20 months in assisted living were spent enjoying bingo, concerts, and dining with new friends.
She worked many years as a secretary for businesses like Martin Marietta and the State of Colorado. Her knowledge of shorthand to take dictation and her speedy typing made her a valued employee.
Jean’s hobbies included fishing, camping, sewing, remodeling, cooking, canning, garage sales, flea markets, crafting, and bingo. Jean enjoyed attending Sunday church services at the Presbyterian church with friends and family.
She is survived by her son Larry (Kristine); her daughter LeRay (Shannon); son-in-law Thomas Smith; grandchildren: Shavonne Smith (Scott Flink), Susan Miller (Dan), Zachary Newell (Erin Lambertz), Nicholas Newell (David Vorwaller), Jacob Newell (Alison Christensen), and Amanda Newell (Brandon Gappa); great grandchildren: Franklin Miller and Ayla Miller; brother-in-law LeRoy Cogswell, nieces Eileen (Ken), Lori, & Cathy; nephews Robert (Juanita) and Ronald. She had numerous grandnieces & grandnephews.
She will be dearly missed, and she will be remembered as the hard working, caring mom, aunt, grandma, and great grandma that was always willing to help others by babysitting, running errands, cooking, sewing, etc.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents John and Louise Doyle, her husband Frank Newell, her son-in-law J.D. Moore, and her sister Deanna Cogswell.
When you went to Jean’s house, she always fed you. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to a local food bank in Jean’s name to help all those people who are currently unemployed.
