88, of Littleton, CO, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2011 at Littleton Adventist Hospital, in Littleton, CO. Edgar was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 2, 1922, a son of the late Thomas Edison Knight and Olga Anna Bertha Plautz. Edgar’s loving spouse of 64 years, Evelyn Knight, preceded him in death on May 4, 2011.
Edgar married Evelyn Mae Knight on June 29, 1946. Together they raised 3 sons and instilled in them the values of hard work, education, honesty, family, and love. Edgar proudly served in the US Air Force for 27 years before officially retiring January 1, 1970 as a Lt. Colonel. He was a member of the Strategic Air Command - 461st Bomb Wing Unit. He was a Bombardier Navigator on the B-52 and a Radar Electronics Warfare Officer on the KC-135R. He flew support missions during the Korean War, WWII, and Operation Chrome Dome while stationed in Amarillo, Texas. Edgar also served as Commander of the Armed Forces Induction Center in Columbus, Ohio during the Vietnam War. After military service, Edgar worked for the USDA for 13 years in the Food and Nutrition Department. During his military and government service he, Evelyn, and their sons lived all over the US and abroad, moving a total of 28 times before finally settling in Colorado. Edgar was very active in church throughout his life. He served on the Church Council and was Treasurer at Centennial Lutheran Church, then served as leader of ground maintenance at St. Philip Lutheran Church. Edgar loved to work around the house and was always happy to help a neighbor or friend in need. He was extremely active in spite of the challenges which age presents, including 15 years of vision impairment late in his life and daring to skydive at the age of 81 !
Survivors include his son Edgar Reginald and wife Terry; son Robin and wife Galinda, son Robert, brother Sidney Knight and sister June Genz. He is survived by 5 grandchildren: Sarah Ludlow, Adam Knight, Cecily Watson, Jenica Knight, and Nathaniel Knight.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7531 S. Kendall Blvd., Littleton, CO 80128 at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 22. Reception to follow at the church. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery with Full Honor Guard at Staging Area C at 2:15pm. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 21 from 3 to 5 pm at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd. Littleton, CO 80121.
