Arletta Roundtree was born Arletta May Wagner on April 20, 1923 at Polyclinic Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Hiram Russell Wagner and Margaret Claire (Stewart) Wagner. She was raised in Stone Valley and Progress, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in 1941.
She married SSgt. Charles L. Roundtree on January 7,1945 at Amarillo Army Airfield. Their first son, Jerry, was born Christmas Eve, 1946 but died soon afterward. In 1954 Charlie and Arletta moved to Denver Colorado. Their second and last child, Dennis was born July 15, 1955 in Denver.
Arletta worked at the Air Reserve Personnel Center until she retired in 1974, and then worked for Cherry Creek School District for several years before retiring for good. Charlie passed away in 1998.
She entered the presence of God on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 in Parker, Colorado, surrounded by members of what she lovingly called “the Tribe”, her extended family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and in-laws. During her last days the facility she was in was turned into a meeting place as the many people she touched came and went.
She was stubborn, forceful and organized. Arletta was also sensitive and generous, and able to accept and forgive the many challenges she was faced with from her beloved “tribe." She was a loyal and hardworking mother, generous and doting grandmother, and a force of nature to her 14 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her son Dennis, daughter-in-law Cee Cee; grandchildren: Brian Roundtree, Kevin Roundtree, Rebecca Strong, Jeff Swettenam and Carrie Shumake; and great-grandchildren Mackenzie, Tyler, Lisha, Shayne, Salem, Kalie, Josh, Trent, Carta, Braidan, Kelton, Claire, Olivia and Harley.
Arletta requested that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Martin Luther Home in Beatrice Nebraska. This is home for those with intellectual disabilities, and was the home for her sister-in-law Della Roundtree for most of her life. It is owned by Mosaic, and donations can be made online. Go to www.mosaicinfo.org, and click on the “donate now” tab. Under “Please use this gift toward” drop down menu, select “Beatrice,” under the “Tribute Information” menu “Type,” select “In Memory Of” and enter Della Roundtree.
