Alice Kay Mclaughlin, age 81, died peacefully surrounded by family on December 5, 2024. Kay was born in Denver on February 2, 1943 to Loretta and George Burke. As a young military wife and mother, she moved several times before settling again in Denver. Kay worked at Swedish Medical Center for forty years before retiring to Alma, Colorado, where she lived with her beloved dogs and abundant wildlife. The mountains held a special place in her heart - from her childhood years when she would visit with her parents until the last years of her life. Kay had a love of trains because of her father’s work on the Colorado railroad. Her Lionel train collection brought joy to her friends and family. She loved researching family genealogy and she gathered detailed information about her family’s history long before the introduction of the internet. Kay enjoyed traveling, and a highlight was a trip to Ireland with her daughters.
She is survived by: her daughter, Angela Sweeten and spouse, Richard Sweeten; her daughter, Jennifer Mclaughlin and partner, James Escobedo; her four grandchildren: Ashley Leavell, Sara Sweeten and spouse, Spencer Reisbord, Jenna Sweeten, and Ava Sweeten; her brother, Donald Burke, and her sister, Kathleen Hale. She was preceded in death by her sister, Janet Arnold.
A private celebration of life will be held later with family. To remember Kay: love an animal, drink a Guinness, or enjoy time in the mountains.
