Bill was born in Schenectady, NY in 1942 to Harlan and Helen Lindberg. Bill studied mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. He then earned a master’s degree from Purdue University, a PhD from Colorado State University, and completed postdoctoral work at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.
While at Colorado State University, Bill met Peggy Guisinger. In 1976 they were married and later had two children, Jennifer and Andy.
In 1973, Bill was hired by the University of Wyoming as a member of the Mechanical Engineering faculty. Bill was a professor, researcher, mentor to graduate students, and Mechanical Engineering Department Head for 10 of his 33 years at UW. He was well respected for his research contributions to experimental fluid mechanics and received the Outstanding Faculty Award from Tau Beta Pi. Bill was also involved in the establishment of the Wyoming Wind Energy and Research Center.
An avid mountaineer, Bill spent a fair amount of his life getting to and standing atop many of the world’s most impressive mountains. He is recognized for a number of first ascents throughout the Rocky Mountains.
Bill will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a thoughtful and compassionate friend, a brilliant scientist, and a fearless adventurer.
William is survived by his wife Peggy Lindberg, his children Jennifer Boyd and Andy Lindberg, his grandchildren Kyleigh, Grayson, Asher, Abigail, Zoey, and Jude, and his brother Harlan Lindberg, Jr.
A gathering to celebrate Bill’s life with friends and family will be held at the Laramie Historic Railroad Depot at 600 South 1st Street on Sunday, August 22nd at 2:00 PM.
