He was born on October 17, 1926, to Raoul O. and Mabelle (Colquitt) Theriault in Haverhill, Massachusetts. After completion of grade school, he and his family moved to Rockland, MA, where he attended junior high school and then moved to the Panama Canal Zone where Terry graduated high school. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as a sonorman in the Pacific Theatre during WWII.
He was honorably discharged from the Navy and Terry spent a couple of years in Boston and the Canal Zone. He then attended and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. During his time at Bradley, Terry ran on the track team and developed a passion for the sport.
Terry’s education and sports career began in 1954, when he accepted the job of Athletic Director at Douglas County High School in Castle Rock. He serviced in that position and taught History until 1957.
Terry and Peggy were married on June 14, 1958. He continued to teach and coach basketball, track and field in Ouray and Boulder. During his time in Boulder, he began working on his Master’s Degree which he received in 1964 and was the graduate assistant coach of the University of Colorado track team. He later accepted a job at Widefield High School in Colorado Springs where he taught, coached track and ran in several Master’s meets.
In 1962, while living in Broomfield, Terry taught and coached at Ranum High School and Westminster High School. Terry and Peggy moved to Castle Rock in 1965, and continued to teach at Westminster High School until his retirement. Realizing retirement wasn’t his thing; he went back to work as a receiving clerk at Target, Inc. for 20 years, again retiring in 2008.
In addition to his love of family and track, Terry was an avid reader and enjoyed going fishing. He was instrumental in bringing cross country to Colorado. He was well known and appreciated for having influenced many teens to make the right choices in life.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Monique; granddaughter, Danielle; grandson, Tyrele and wife TiAmo; great-granddaughter, Keira; brother Neyle and wife Margaret of Savannah, GA; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2011 at St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church in Castle Rock. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Douglas/Elbert County Task Force, 1638 Park St. Castle Rock, CO 80109, in Terry’s Memory.
