Despite experiencing the loss of her parents at a young age, she prioritized her role as a mother and wife, effortlessly balancing work and home life. Her dedication to her children’s education, as evidenced by her involvement in their schools, demonstrates her unwavering support and love for her family.
Joan’s adventurous spirit also shone through in her love for travel. Exploring different parts of the world with her husband and sister allowed her to create cherished memories and strengthened family bonds. Whether it was visiting exotic destinations like Hawaii and Mexico, or returning to her hometown of Chicago, Joan found joy in experiencing new places and cultures.
Additionally, Joan’s resilience in the face of challenges, such as her battle with cancer and diabetes, serves as an inspiration to all who knew her. Her courage and determination to persevere through adversity exemplify her strength of character and unwavering spirit.

Joan is survived by her husband of 62 years, Lyle; 3 daughters; Lynne (Daniels) Justice, Caryn (Daniels) Kabis, son in law: Michael Kabis, and Jayne (Daniels) Friesen, son in law: David Friesen. Grandchildren: Nicholas Justice, wife: Janelle Justice, Julia Justice and Caroline Justice. Jacob Friesen, Joshua Friesen, wife: Shelby. Great Grandchildren: Dances, Aleiyah and Payson. Her beloved sister, Lucille (Smoody) (Lewner) Lytis; Nephew: Ricky Lewner. Nieces: Rhonda (Lewner) Kemens, Patti (Lewner) Steffens, husband Bruce Steffens. Brother, Anthony Smoody (deceased) Nephew: Anthony Smoody Jr. Niece: Carol Workman (Smoody), husband: Rob Workman
