James was born in Goshen, New York on November 25, 1972 to Donald and Patricia MacInnes. He spent the majority of his childhood in Monroe, New York and graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School. He received his associate’s degree from SUNY Delhi and worked as an electrical apprentice for a few years before moving across the country with a couple of his buddies to work for Qualcomm in San Diego.
James eventually made his way back to the east coast to work for John Wiley & Sons, a publishing company in New York City, where he met his wife, Catherine. He continued to work in the industry for various companies including Enron, Cisco Systems, XO Communications, and Yipes/Reliance Globalcom.
James always loved the outdoors and his dream was to live in Alaska. He was offered an opportunity by Alaska Communications Systems, so he and Catherine moved their 3 young boys to Eagle River and then Anchorage for a great family adventure! They enjoyed a wonderful 5 years in Alaska and added their baby girl, Catie, to complete their family. Eventually, James’ career took them to Austin, Texas and finally Colorado to work for Equinix, where he remained for the last 10 years of his career.
James loved to read, especially books that were historical or religious in nature. He also enjoyed going to the shooting range, but he was most passionate about hunting and fishing. His hunting adventures took him all over North America, including various parts of Canada, the east coast, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona, Hawaii, and so many different parts of Alaska. He went hunting all over Alaska including Adak Island, the Brooks Range, Prince William Sound, Paradise Lakes, and a particularly challenging caribou hunt at Etivlik Lake where he was stranded for days. James especially loved bird hunting with his dog, Rosie, and was so proud of her ability to point and retrieve. He also loved to fish, especially in Alaska on the Kenai, Confluence, and Russian Rivers.
James was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Catherine; sons, Patrick, Colin, and Ryan; daughter, Catie; his beloved hunting dog, Rosie; father, Donald; sister, Jennifer and her husband, Scott; as well as 10 nieces and nephews, and many in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, and godchildren.
