Esther was born in Ralston Oklahoma on May 11th, 1928 to Annis and Frank Felkins. She was the middle child of thirteen. She grew up with a house full of love, fun, chores, and family. They moved many times during her childhood and always grew crops and had some livestock, especially chickens. She learned to work hard at a young age and continued this throughout her life. The family ultimately came to Colorado, first Kiowa and then Elizabeth where she graduated high school and met John Walker. She was not immediately impressed with this guy that came to play basketball. But John won her over and they were married on September 30th, 1950.
Their first child, Nancy, was born in 1951. Esther was left alone to live with her mother-in-law when John served in the Army stationed in Japan during the Korean War. He sent many mementos home for his little family. It was during this time Esther learned to drive. When he returned from Japan, John worked for Gulf Oil Company and Esther again moved around quite a bit. Their son Cliff was born in 1954 in Oklahoma and another daughter, Linda, was born in 1956 in Colorado.
Esther was finally able to settle down in Castle Rock Colorado in 1960. They purchased their first house in 1962 and Esther was able to concentrate on being a full-time home maker. She loved to sew and made many Easter dresses and school clothes for her children. She also made several wedding and flower girl dresses for her granddaughters.
Esther was very social and made friends wherever she went. There was always some sort of class or activity she was involved in; sewing, cake-decorating, bowling, or having coffee with neighbors. Esther and John moved to Eckert Colorado where she was very involved with the senior center receiving an award for the best volunteer of the month. Esther and John moved back to Castle Rock in 2004 due to John’s declining health and to have family close by to help. She again made many friends in the neighborhood, loving to go check the mail when someone was out in their yard. She would talk for hours with them on their driveway.
Esther was not shy about sharing her faith and always had her bible out and open, reading Daily Bread and Guidepost every day. She was quick to tell you what the Lord would say about any given situation. She attended church regularly and was involved with bible studies and vacation bible school in the various churches she attended. She was not happy when her strength and stamina kept her from attending church every Sunday.
Esther lived at home independently, only needing help for meals and errands until December of 2022. She had a fall that sent her to the hospital but she returned home only to then have several small strokes that again sent her to the hospital, then rehab. We were able to bring her home. She was always asking “When can I do this myself?” when she had another small stroke and was not able to recover. She went home to be with her Lord at peace in her home surrounded by family.
