Scout was born December 12, 1982 in Titusville, Florida where she lived until January 20, 2015, before relocating to Colorado until her death.
Scout’s story as told by her Mother, Tracy Spears: If you knew Scout, you were part of her family. Scout was one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever known! She loved everyone, she was kind and compassionate. She would do anything for anyone and would give you her last dollar if you needed it or at least she would share it with you. In the end she fell in love with God and just wanted to help one addict at a time.
I'm not sure if you all know her story but she was quite a difficult child growing up, headstrong, rebellious, and always in some kind of mischief. Scout got very sick in November 2013 from drugs and started to renew her relationship with God. In January 2015 she went to a rehab center in Colorado, which was totally orchestrated by God. She really thrived there. She went through the program and began to fall madly in love with God. The rehab center was not a Christian based rehab center but Scout remained strong in her faith. Once she completed the program she starting working at the rehab facility doing various jobs; House Manager, Chef and became Director of Transitional Living which she thoroughly loved. Scout had a lot of good ideas about how the program should be run since she herself had experience with the transition from a drug-life to a drug free-life. She loved working and making a difference in people’s lives at Community Recovery and her group meetings. She worked hard and earned her Colorado Addiction Counselor Certificate, Level I and nearly completed the Level II course. Scout’s passion was helping people, even before herself.
She was involved with the Valley View Church of God in Englewood, CO and LOVED her church! Sunday was her favorite day of the week because she got to go to church.
About two weeks prior to her death the rehab center closed with no notice. It turned her world upside down. While trying to help others who also lost everything Scout lost her job, lost the place she was living at Community Recovery (the only place she had lived in her adult life drug free) and lost her support system. I talked to her on Tuesday evening and she was doing well. She was planning to go out and look for a job the next day. She felt optimistic about all the possible opportunities near her new living arrangements. She overdosed the next day on drugs, unintentionally, of course. I have been told it is not uncommon to die from drugs once you quit and then use again.
I am so sad and want this to all go away but I know it won't. We are so thankful for the last two years that she had to get close to God. I would rather have that than to have her never do drugs and never have that relationship with God. Because of that relationship, I know she is with God in heaven now. God allows all things and good will come from this. It's just the trials we have to go through in this life that are so hard.
In the end Scout was fragile and just made a mistake that turned fatal. The difference between drug addiction and other addictions (like my sugar addiction) is drug addiction can have an immediate fatal consequence.
Not only am I thankful that she fell so madly in love with God the last few years I am also thankful for the relationship Kailey, her daughter, and I, and others have had with her. We are really going to miss her. It gives me enormous peace to know that she is in Heaven with God our Father where we will see her again someday.
