William Lewis Scott, 90, of Cary, passed away May 25, 2024. He was born in McCurtain County, Oklahoma on May 7, 1934 to Lewis Bedford Scott and Mary Coleman Scott. He was married to Susanne Raines Scott for 62 years. After graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1957, he served in the US Army for 22 years, retiring as Lt. Colonel in 1980. Bill and his family lived in many locations across the country from Washington, DC to Monterey, California, as well as 3 years overseas in Germany. Bill had tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam and was a member of the Army Inspector General’s team visiting and assessing military units overseas for their proficiency. During his military career, he was awarded many medals of Honor including the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Joint Services Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Following his retirement, Bill and Sue moved from Washington, DC to Cary, North Carolina, where he worked for Northern Telecom for 23 years.
Bill was a great fisherman and his family spent many years boating on the lakes and reservoirs in Northern Virginia and subsequently the bays and ocean off the Carolina coast.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Clark, of Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susanne; two sons, Keith Blakeley Scott and his wife, Olivia, and William Ashton Scott, of Holly Springs, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Blakeley Lewis Scott and Austin Keith Scott, of Raleigh, North Carolina; and his sister, Carolyn Jackson, of Moore, Oklahoma.
Bill was intelligent, ambitious, determined and dedicated to his family, but will always be remembered for being kind.
