Whitney Jensen Murphy, age 38, of Durham, North Carolina passed away in her home on October 2, 2021 at 1:42pm. She fought a 5-month battle with stage 4 metastatic colorectal cancer, and her strength through her fight was staggering. When she passed, she was surrounded by her family and those that loved her.
She was born Whitney Jensen Woodyard to Jack T. Woodyard and Gerry L. Woodyard in Medina, Ohio on December 22, 1982. She graduated from Revere High School in Akron, Ohio and received a B.A. in Spanish from Miami University of Ohio. She moved to North Carolina after she graduated and was last employed as a contractor to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences from April 2018 until she passed.
Whitney was a force to be reckoned with her entire life. She was always forthright and authentic. She was the consummate planner and organizer and worked very hard to stay in touch with friends over the years. She touched so many people’s lives with her beautiful, giving spirit and open heart. She first and foremost loved her family, and she was truly blessed to have married the “love of her life." Among her many other loves were sleeping in, trips to the beach, going to the movies, all things baking, snuggling with her dog Tucker, Friday night dinners with her sister, and red velvet cupcakes from her favorite bakery.
Whitney is survived by Jimmy, her loving husband of nearly 12 years, her 8-year-old daughter Lydia, and her 5-year-old son James and her snuggly labradoodle Tucker. She is also survived by her father Jack Woodyard (and his wife Leslie), her mother Gerry Knowles (and her husband Mike), her sister Hayleigh Parkin (and her husband Lukas) and three nieces Murphy, Bailey, and Maisie. She will be dearly missed by all her stepbrothers and sisters, dear cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and friends.
Whitney was a truly incredible person, and her spirit will live on through the lives of her beautiful children. She was an inspiration to many, and after her diagnosis, she dedicated herself to outreach and support for other cancer fighters and survivors. She is gone, but she and her impact on the world will never be forgotten.
A celebration of her life will be held on October 16, 2021. Come and go as your time allows between noon and 4p.m. at:
