Troy Childress Hogue went to be with the Lord Jesus on October 11, 2024. His courageous faith journey through a year and a half with cancer is over, and eternity with Christ Jesus is his glorious permanent home. The reward for trusting Him will be the salvation of your soul. 1 Peter 2:9
Troy was born in Pasadena, Texas, December 21, 1965, a gift from God to Joe and Sandy Hogue. His maternal grandparents were John D. and Mattie Jones, and paternal, Joe and Ruth Hogue, of Pasadena, Texas. Troy's family moved to Raleigh, NC, in 1971, where his baby brother (Kyle Hogue) was born in October of that year. He grew up in the west Raleigh area, living in the same house in Roylene Acres most of his life. He grew in his faith at Westover Methodist Church, trusting Jesus Christ as his Savior at age seven.
Troy attended Wake Christian Academy from 8th through 12th grade, graduating in 1985. He loved to drive, taking road trips, many with friends, all over his home state from the mountains to the Outer Banks and several trips out west. He loved his dog, CJ, and his cat, Gracie.
In his early 20's, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, forming many good friendships there and discovering his culinary gift for hospitality. This culminated in his decision to attend culinary school at Johnson & Wales University in Charleston, SC. He received his Associate of Science in Culinary Arts in 2001 followed by his Bachelor of Science in Food Service Management in 2002.
His career as a chef ranged from an internship at The Fearrington House in Pittsboro, manager and chef at Exploris Café in Raleigh, owning and managing Holy Smokes BBQ, serving Wednesday night meals at First Baptist Church in Cary, and his 24+ year career as Executive Chef at Highgrove Estates in Fuquay-Varina with Vicky Ismail.
Troy was a devoted son to Joe and Sandy, and a strong brother for Kyle to look up to. He had a true servant’s heart, and that was evident in the way he lived his life. His joy was to help and bless others and to be a friend forever to all who knew him. He played the guitar, led a quiet life, was humble, and an incredible gift giver. Troy was always pouring himself into the needs of others, sharing his home with some who did not have a place, giving freely to anyone who needed help, and eventually moving next door to his mother in 2019 to be near her as she got older. God's ways are higher and wiser, and in 2023, when he was diagnosed with cancer, it became evident that part of the purpose of being next door was so Sandy could be Troy’s caregiver.
Troy is survived by his mother, Sandy Hogue, brother, Kyle Hogue and wife Gabriela, his aunt Paula Scheffman and uncle Dave Scheffman, cousin Brian Scheffman and wife Jessica, Corbin and Carson, aunt Bernadette Hogue, cousin Holly Troyer and husband Aaron, and Natalie of Houston, Texas; cousin Cheryl Willard and husband Kelly, Shelby and Hannah of Montgomery, Texas; aunt Connie Mitchell and husband Tom, cousin Miranda Hunt and husband Jack, Jax and Jules, cousin Mallory Mitchell, cousin Mark Mitchell and wife Amy, Joseph, Ellie, and Samuel of Dallas, Texas. Troy is preceded in death by his dad, Joe C. Hogue, Jr., his uncle Paul Hogue, and his grandparents.
The family will have an intimate graveside service on October 18, 2024, at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 21, 2024, from 11:00-3:00 pm at Highgrove Estates at 1613 S. Main St. Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526 (casual attire). After a time of glorifying God and honoring Troy’s life we will partake in a meal, just as Troy would have it.
