Ruth Mewborn Clifton

After graduating Hookerton High School, Ruth attended East Carolina Teacher’s College (now East Carolina University) for one year before moving to Raleigh to attend Rex Hospital School of Nursing. Following her graduation in 1951, she spent over three decades as a nurse at Rex Hospital before retiring in 1984.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Louise Spence, Kinston, NC and Grace Shackelford, Kinston, NC.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin “Buck” Clifton, Raleigh, NC; Daughter Shirley Clifton, Apex,NC; son Edwin Clifton Jr., Cary, NC; granddaughter Kelsie Clifton, Cary, NC; Twin sister Ruby Harper, Snow Hill, NC; many nieces and nephews, and dear family friends LeAnne Wilkerson, Apex, NC; Cindee McCarroll, Cary, NC; and Alex Prunka , Rockville, MD.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, June 7 at Ephesus Baptist Church, 6767 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27606. Burial will follow in the Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10-10:45 am prior to the service at Ephesus Baptist Church.
