Neil R. “Sonny” Spain, age 93, of Cary, North Carolina, formerly of Petersburg, Virginia; went to be with his Lord and Savior and his deceased family on May 30, 2024. He was born on August 13, 1930 in Petersburg, Virginia to James Neal Spain and Bernice Cornett Spain. Sonny was predeceased by his parents and sister, Frances S. Lingerfelt.
He was a loving father, grandfather and friend, who never met a stranger. He is survived by his sons: David Neil Spain and wife, Linda, of Garner, NC and Stephen Gibbs Spain and wife Lisa, of Fuquay-Varina, NC; by a grandson: Patrick Neil Spain, of Raleigh, NC; as well as, special friend: Jackie Greer, of Petersburg, VA. He was proud of his sons and encouraged and followed them in all their activities. He kept in touch with many of his high school, college and Army friends.
A graduate of Petersburg High School, Class of 1950, Sonny loved his classmates. He played basketball at PHS and was Team Captain,1949-1950. He also played fast pitch softball in the Tri-City area and with the US Army in Austria, winning several championships locally and in Austria, including the Command Championship as a pitcher. An Army Veteran, he served two years in Austria as a member of the Inspectors General Section.
He is also a graduate of Richmond Professional Institute (now known as VCU) and The College of William and Mary School of Business in 1961, with a BS in Business Administration. After serving as Supervisor of Purchasing with Allied Fibers' Technical Center and in Moncure, NC; he retired in 1993.
He was formerly active at First Baptist Church in Petersburg as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon and was a member of the Cary Lions Club, Cary Booster Club and the Petersburg Old Geezers Organization in Petersburg, VA.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 5, 2024 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, VA.
