Loved by so many and affectionately known as Mama, Mema, and Miss Millie. Her family and especially her babies were her most loved and cherished priorities throughout her long life. She was born to Aubrey Nelson, Sr., and Maggie Nelson on April 5, 1928, and raised in the town of Whitmire, South Carolina, where she graduated from Whitmire High School. She worked in the textile mills of the Carolinas until she retired and made a name for herself as “the Burger King lady” in Morganton, North Carolina. She was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church, in Cary, North Carolina, where she thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Dorcas Sunday School class. Mema’s kind, gentle spirit and her unwavering, unconditional love touched those around her every single day of her life. Mema was the heart and soul of our family.
Her husband of over 67 years, James McMillan, Sr., predeceased her in 2013.
Surviving are her sister, Nita Nelson, daughters, Linda Mann of Morrisville, NC, Karen Bean of Camden, SC, son, Jim McMillan, Jr. (Donna) of Asheville, NC, grandchildren, Cheryl Overturf of Duncan, SC, Kellye McMillan of Greenwood, SC, Russ Mann of Apex, NC, Susie Ulmer of West Columbia, SC, Jennifer Young of Wilmington, NC, Andy Bean of Camden, SC, Jamie McMillan of Memphis, TN, and Dustin McMillan of Asheville, NC, eighteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
