Mike was born Sept 21, 1956, in Dugway, UT. He grew up in Kennewick, WA. His family moved to the East Coast in 1971. Mike earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. He enjoyed playing the clarinet in the Penn State Blue Band. Upon graduation, he was employed by IBM, moved to Cary, NC in 1979 and has been a resident of the Cary / Raleigh area ever since. He earned a MS in Mechanical Engineering from NC State University and was a Wolfpack supporter for 4 decades. A patented engineer, Mike applied his expertise in the computer, automotive, and aerospace industries.
As a young boy he played baseball and was a wrestler. He started cycling in his early twenties and that remained his sport of passion. He rode 6,000-10,000 miles a year on his road bike. He organized group rides and early season races such as the January Nats.
Mike enjoyed watching Carolina Hurricanes hockey and attending games with his wife Patricia, nephew Bill and friends.
Mike is a devout Christian, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Mike is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia (Martin) Kinney; brother Bill Kinney and wife Elena of Spring City PA, sister Nanette McCarthy and husband Kevin of Peachtree City GA, sister Amy Licata and husband John of Buffalo NY, 7 nephews, 2 nieces, 2 grandnieces, 1 grandnephew, and many friends who are as close as family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Wallace Kinney and Nelle Delores Kinney of PA.
The family will receive friends at the Brown-Wynne funeral home in Cary on Tuesday Oct 5th from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Services will be held at Hope Community Church Raleigh NC on Wednesday Oct 6 at 11am. The family will receive friends before the service from 10-10:45 am.
