Kenneth Roger Johnson, age 91, of Cary, NC passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2022 surrounded by his wife and children. His family is comforted in knowing Ken heard and prayed Psalm 23 among his last spoken words.
Born on his immigrant mother’s birthday (September 2) in 1930, he grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut among a close-knit Swedish community. He graduated from Dartmouth College and earned a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. After medical school and an internship, he served as an officer in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy, during which time he was stationed in Long Beach, California. It was there he met Jean, his wife of nearly 63 years.
Ken and Jean moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1959, where Ken completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia. They moved to Northern Virginia in 1962, where they raised a family and Ken practiced medicine at Alexandria Hospital for almost 40 years. He loved his work, and considered it a privilege to deliver thousands of babies during his career.
Ken and Jean retired to Cary in 2007, moving to the same neighborhood as their daughter and her family. Throughout his life, Ken enjoyed playing golf, rooting for his favorite NFL team (Ken was a “Sonny” partisan during the Jurgensen/Kilmer rivalry), and cheering avidly for both North Carolina and Virginia college basketball teams. In Cary, Ken greatly enjoyed going with Jean to the Rex Wellness Center and developed a close network of friends; “Treat Day” at the Wellness Center was a weekly favorite during which he’d pass out homemade cookies. He was known for his cheerful countenance and welcome greeting of a strong handshake. When asked how he was doing, his stock answer was “Pretty good for an old man!”
Ken’s real passion was, and his legacy will be, family. His wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, sister and other relatives brought him great happiness and joy throughout his life. He loved playing with his grandchildren and took great pride in sharing their accomplishments with all who would listen. Ken was preceded in death by his brother Elmer Johnson. He is survived by wife Jean, of Cary; sister Jean Forsberg of Veradale, WA; daughter Anne and son-in-law Robert “Chip” Smithson of Cary, NC; son Roger and daughter-in-law Kim Johnson of Richmond, VA; grandson Rob and wife Caroline Smithson, of Wilmington, NC; grandson Connor Smithson of San Clemente, CA; granddaughter Kelsey Johnson of Arlington, VA; granddaughter Anna Johnson of Richmond, VA; and granddaughter Libby Johnson of Richmond, VA; great grandchildren Erin and Clay Smithson of Wilmington, NC; and many dear nieces and nephews.
The family thanks Drs. Josh Bloom and Dan George for their kind and compassionate care.
The family held a private service and burial. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to any of The Salvation Army (www.salvationarmyusa.org), Dorcas Ministries of Cary (www.dorcascary.org), or Transitions LifeCare/hospice of Raleigh (www.transitionslifecare.org).
