Jo Allison Goodwin

Jo was born and raised in Asheville, NC, to the late Joseph Wheeler and Donnie Mae Ward Allison. She graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and was a science teacher. She and John were married in 1957 and their love affair lasted until his death in 2014.

The Goodwins lived in Hickory, NC, for 17 years. There they raised their three children and were very active in the community and First Presbyterian Church. Jo was a homemaker then taught at Drexel Junior High for several years.

They moved to Louisburg, NC, in 1983. She was the head of the science department at Bunn High. They owned and operated Louisburg Office Supply and Wake Forest Office Supply for several years. They became antique dealers and started Allison’s Antiques.

In 1989, they moved to Cary. She and John were active members of the Cary Senior Center and were part of several Bridge clubs and book clubs.

In 2013, she moved to Magnolia Glen where she spent much time playing Bridge and enjoying the company of her many friends there. Jo had a quick wit and loved bantering with those close to her.

Jo’s passion was her family, which over the years included family dogs and cats. She is survived by one son, Paul Goodwin (Angie) of Raleigh; two daughters, Jennifer Miller (Ed) of Augusta, GA, and Jan Muscarella (Michael) of Richmond, VA; five grandsons, John Goodwin (Brittany) of Murfreesboro, TN, Scott Goodwin (Morgan) of Louisville, KY, Ben Miller and Zack Miller of Augusta, GA, and Matt Muscarella of Richmond, VA; and one granddaughter, Allison Muscarella of Richmond, VA.

Jo overcame many obstacles in her later years, and defied the odds more than once. Now she has joined her beloved John and both are healed and at peace.

The family would like to thank the staff at Magnolia Glen and Transitions hospice for the loving care and compassion they showed Jo.

There will be a private celebration of her life later.
