Jeanette lit up whenever she described her childhood in Garfield, NJ, her grandparents’ Dutch bakery, and adventures with her siblings: Catherine Long, Anna Mae Roedema, and Kemp “Bud” Roedema. After graduating from Hackensack School of Nursing, she worked as a nurse on the medical surgical floors at Hackensack Hospital, in private practice offices, and finished her career as a geriatric nurse. Being a proud RN, she maintained her nursing license until age 90 and often talked shop with other nurses.
Jeanette met the love of her life, Frank, when they were set up on a blind date by one of her nurse friends. They were married on Valentine’s Day and spent 58 years as avid travelers, gardeners, and animal lovers. Together, they enjoyed cruises and trips to Europe, the Caribbean, and Hawaii with the Telephone Pioneers of America as well as excursions around the continental US in their travel trailer. Maine in the fall and Florida in the winter were favorite destinations. No matter where she was, Jeanette avidly followed the Yankees, UNC athletics, and her favorite pro football players, often calling family to discuss the game and celebrate a win. After 50 years in Pompton Lakes, NJ, Jeanette and Frank moved to Cary, NC, where Jeanette bonded with new friends and neighbors playing dominos.
Jeanette’s boundless love brought sunshine to Frank, her two children, Frank of Santa Clara CA, and Judy of Cary, NC, granddaughter, Jessie of Morrisville, NC, her many nieces and nephews, and her community. She was an incredible hostess who loved to welcome family and friends into her home or send her unmatched chocolate chip cookies around the world to relatives and friends between visits. Jeanette was a Civil Defense Nurse, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, and volunteer for many causes near to her heart, bringing comfort, opportunity, and joy to everyone she met.
