James was born in Appling County, Georgia, to Jehugh and Gladys (Miller) Yawn. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia Southwestern University and his master’s in public administration from Oklahoma State University. James served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, spending much of that time stationed in Germany. On October 4, 1975, he married Virginia Smith, and they raised their daughter in the suburbs of Atlanta.
James worked for many years for a mail order clothing company based in Americus, Georgia. While working full-time, he fulfilled his long-time goal of completing his law degree and gaining admission to the State Bar of Georgia. He was active in his community, his church and in his daughter’s activities, frequently serving in booster clubs and parent-teacher associations. Upon retirement, he worked for several years as an adjunct professor at Georgia Perimeter College. After moving to North Carolina, James was very active in his grandchildren’s lives, creating special traditions, teaching them to fish and encouraging them in all their pursuits.
James is survived by his wife Virginia; daughter Sara Lang (Mark); grandchildren Matthew and Emily Lang; sister Dorothy Spires; several nieces and a nephew; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jehugh and Gladys Yawn.
In recognition of the continuing risks posed by coronavirus, funeral services will not be held at this time. To honor James’ memory, please contribute to the American Heart Association or a charity that is close to your heart.
