Hugh Monroe Dyson, 89, of Raleigh, NC, passed away in his home on February 1st, 2014. He is survived by his loving wife of over 66 years, Dorothy Lee Whitfield Dyson; children Paulette, Hugh Jr., Adrienne, and Lee; grandchildren Will, Andy, Laura, Erin, Adam, and Joel; and great-grandchildren Noah, Owen, Elias, Liam, and Lucas.
Born November 13th, 1924, in Greensboro, NC, the son of William Butler and Bessie Roberta Smith Dyson, he graduated from Cary high school, where he was a member of the competitive varsity boxing team. Hugh went on to serve his country during World War II in the US Navy aboard an Atlantic Coast minesweeper as both Radioman and Master Gunner. He returned home a decorated veteran and applied his skills in the art of stone masonry and brick laying as a licensed general contractor. A charter member of the Home Builders Association of Raleigh, Wake County, Hugh spent more than three decades custom building homes in prestigious communities and mentoring aspiring residential builders. During his pre-retirement years, he served as Director of Facilities Maintenance for Wake County. In addition to being a member and trustee of Ephesus Baptist Church for over 60 years, he also oversaw several physical plant improvements to his home church, including a major sanctuary renovation.
In his free time, Hugh was an avid fisherman, particularly along the Intracoastal Waterway near his Pungo River based cottage retreat. He was also a fan of North Carolina author Robert Ruark of The Old Man and the Boy series, a portrait artist and oil painting hobbyist, an enthusiastic supporter of Triangle Area university athletic programs, and a former member of the Lions club.
Humorous, witty, and compassionate with friends, family, and colleagues, Hugh will be honored in a memorial service, which will be held at Ephesus Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, on Saturday, February 8th, at 2:00 p.m. Burial of ashes will be in Raleigh Memorial Park, and online condolences may be sent to the family through www.brownwynnecary.com.
