Hazel Wilson Day went home to be with her Lord and Savior March 11, 2021 surrounded by her family. Hazel Bell Wilson was born May 28, 1931 in the Beaver Dam community of Watauga County, North Carolina. She was the youngest of 6 children born to William and Mollie Wilson. She was loved by all that knew her for her kindness and humility.
Following her sister Rose, Hazel moved to Raleigh in 1954. She began working at the famous Sir Walter Hotel in downtown as a waitress, then hostess and later a dining room manager. Hazel was always a smiling face to all who dined there. Shortly after arriving to Raleigh, she met Jesse Day, a courtship began and on February 4, 1956 the two were married. In 1958, they bought a house in Cary which Hazel lived in the rest of her life. In 1964, their only son, Jesse Day Jr. was born. Sadly, in 1974 Jesse Sr. died, but Hazel persevered raising Jesse Jr. and working at Sir Walter until it closed. She then went to work at the Mission Valley Inn as a dining room hostess and later dining room manager until her retirement in 2000.
The "Cake Lady". Those who knew Hazel knew her love, and talent for baking. Passing down Adams Street in Cary you could often smell the sweet aroma of a lemon pound cake, or pumpkin pie Hazel was preparing for someone. She would take any occasion, or sometime no occasion at all, to bake a tasty treat for a friend. A member of North Cary Baptist Church, later Harvest Church; Hazel loved her church family.
Family, her family was what she treasured most. Whether a phone call or time spent with her three grandchildren, she never passed up time to be with her family. Her walls were always adorned with pictures of her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jesse, and siblings: Hugh Wilson, Woodrow Wilson, Ruth Wilson, Elizabeth Clouse and Rose Edna Beach. She is survived by her son Jesse Day Jr. (Brenda) and three grandchildren: Olivia, Caleb and Emily Day.
