Harriett Brock Ford Bowen, aged 101, passed away peacefully at Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, NC, on July 16, 2024. Harriett was born on June 21, 1923, on Phillips' Choice Farm near Kennedyville, MD, to Herbert Spry Ford Sr. and Lulah Galloway Harrison Ford.
Harriett graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Home Economics and began her career working in a chemistry lab at Western Electric in Baltimore. On June 7, 1952, she married Dr. Joshua Shelton Bowen Jr., and they began their life together in Charlottesville, VA, before moving to Alexandria, VA, Cincinnati, OH, and eventually settling in Cary, NC. Josh’s career with the EPA led them to a vibrant life filled with family, friends, and community service.
Harriett was deeply committed to her family and heritage, being an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of 1812, and the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons. She had a passion for genealogy, golf, sewing, cooking, and needlework. Harriett and Josh were known for their warm hospitality, hosting numerous gatherings at their home.
In addition to her parents and husband, Harriett is predeceased by her sisters, Margaret Ford Carter (William), and Catherine Ford Ayres (Robert), and her brother Herbert Spry Ford, Jr. (Jane). She is survived by her beloved daughter, Harriett Brock Bowen Fransen (Thomas) of Cary, NC; granddaughters, Kathleen Bowen Fransen Cioni (Jonathan) of Cary, NC, and Susanna Brock Fransen Meloro (Daniel) of Blakeslee, PA.
A memorial service to honor Harriett’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 221 Union Street, Cary, NC at 2:00 PM August 2, 2024. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Shrewsbury Episcopal Parish, Kennedyville, MD.
