Gregory Joseph Harman

Greg was born in Fairfax, Virginia, on July 20, 1970, to Dennis Paul Harman and Suzanne Nichols Harman. He was married to Laura Eubank Harman for 24 years.

Greg attended Robinson High School in Fairfax, Virginia before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and finance from North Carolina State University in 1992. He then went on to earn an MBA in supply chain management from Penn State University in 2002.

During his time at NC State, Greg was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and the Navy ROTC program. Upon graduation, Greg attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, Georgia before serving in the Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) and then as Sales Officer aboard the USS Boxer LHD4.

Greg was a plank owner of the USS Boxer. During tours in Washington DC, Greg served as an Integrated Logistics Support intern at Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), as a White House Social Aide during President Clinton’s administration, and finally as a logistics officer in the Military Sealift Command (MSC). Greg continued to serve as a Navy reserve officer while working on his MBA at Penn State University.

Greg had a post-Navy career in supply chain management and was serving as Senior Vice President of Operations for C&S Wholesale Grocers at the time of his death. His prior career experience included work as Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for Owens & Minor, as well as Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Vice President for Supply Chain for Grainger, Inc. and Acklands-Grainger, Inc., located in Chicago and Toronto, respectively.

Greg’s volunteer activities included serving as a Board member for Bunker Labs, which seeks to inspire veterans and their spouses to start and grow their own businesses following military service, and as a Board member for the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory, which creates an exceptional and engaging environment for young musicians in the Chicago area and beyond. Greg also enjoyed volunteering for the Adlai E. Stevenson Band and the Stevenson High School Hockey program in support of his sons.

An avid trail and mountain bike rider, Greg was also a huge fan of the NC State Wolfpack and Icepack, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Carolina Hurricanes. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends above all else.

A close friend of Greg’s shared, “There are lots of people who come into our lives and play a role or have an impact. There is a small group of those people who leave their mark or make a lasting impression. Then there is an even smaller group who truly change your life trajectory, the very arc of who you become as a person. Greg was one of those people for me.”

In addition to his wife Laura, Greg is survived by their three sons, Reid David Harman of New York, New York; Ian Leland Harman of Williamsburg, Virginia; and Spencer Joseph Harman of Raleigh, North Carolina; his mother Suzanne of Richmond, Virgnia; a sister Julie O’Hanley (Frank) of Lake Anna, Virginia; a niece Kennedy O’Hanley of Richmond; a nephew, Chase O’Hanley of Harrisonburg, Virginia; and a half-brother Dennis Schleider of Montauk, New York. Greg was preceded in death by his father, Dennis P. Harman.

Greg's Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 7, 2024 starting at 10:30am at the NC State Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center. The Park Alumni Center is located at 2450 Alumni Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606. Remarks will begin around 11am. If planning to attend Greg's Celebration of Life, please RSVP to [email protected] with your number of guests, so that adequate refreshments can be available. Anyone coming from out of town may want to consider looking for hotel accommodations near RDU airport or near Durham/Chapel Hill, as many Raleigh area hotels are booked due to other local events that weekend.
