Fred was married to Frances Dee Duncan for 66 years. They met as students at Cary High. They were married in September 1955, and together they raised 3 sons: Frederick Martin Reigher III, Douglas Duncan Reigher and Joseph Mason Reigher.
Fred graduated from Cary High School in 1948 and went to work at the United States Post Office in Raleigh, NC shortly thereafter. Fred had a remarkable 34-year career in the postal service. He was a regional training manager, station manager and he was nominated and with the consent of the US Senate and President Gerald Ford appointed Postmaster of Chapel Hill, NC on 11 May 1974. Fred retired from the USPS in 1985.
Colonel Reigher had a successful military career as well, serving 39 years in the NC National Guard and US Army Reserve. Enlisting in 1950 as an aircraft mechanic in Apex, Reigher received a direct commision to Second Lieutenant in 1958 making him a "Mustang", a highly regarded military tradition. As a Senior Aviator he was highly skilled in both fixed and rotary winged aircraft, commanded at company and squadron level, and served as the S3/Air Operations Officer in the NCNG 30th Infantry Brigade, "Old Hickory" and went on to study Military Science at the US Army War College.
Fred enjoyed building and restoring classic muscle cars. He was a charter member and served as president of the Rambling Rebels hot rod club in Raleigh in the 50s and early 60s. Fred also enjoyed playing golf, fishing and gardening.
Fred is survived by his wife Frances Dee, sons Marty, Doug, and Joe, daughters-in-law Maggie and Verna, granddaughters Anna, Mary and Gracie, and grandsons Lee and Mason
The family is not conducting a service. Fred is to be buried at sea with full military honors by the US Navy.
