Dewitt C. Jordan, Jr., or “Dee” as he was known to friends and family, was born in Memphis, Tennessee to Dewitt C. Jordan, Sr. and Francis Logue Wright. The couple was in Memphis at the time because Dewitt Sr. was a bookkeeper for a large company and traveled often with his family. Their hometown, however, was Vaiden, Mississippi. Dee’s maternal ancestors were longtime residents of this small, rural town.
When Dee was just 4 years old, a family friend took him for a ride in a bi-plane. The experience left a profound impression on Dee that would eventually inform his career. Dee’s first job, however, was working the pipeline, a decision that would lead him to Carroll County, Maryland where he met and married Joyce L. Snyder. Dee got his private and commercial pilot’s license while living in Manchester, Maryland, then moved to Hagerstown, Maryland with his young family to start his flying career.
Dee flew for Henson Aviation in the early 1970s. Later that same decade he became a flight service employee for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). When Dee and his family moved to Cary, North Carolina in 1977, he worked at RDU Airport. After thirty years with the FAA, Dee retired and became a volunteer for the Cary Park Patrol.
Dee loved his family, friends, hometown, and every dog he ever met. He enjoyed flying, reading, genealogy, archeology, wearing fedoras, and smoking cigars. He was known for his introversion, sweet tooth, courtly manner, and playful wit. He was also a devoted feeder of birds and his wild “critters”.
Dee passed on the new moon in Taurus just two days after his 84th birthday. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son Jeff and family, his daughter Kim, his brother Jim and family, and his nephew's Dennis and Richard and their families. We thank Transitions Hospice Home for taking exceptional care of him and being his vestibule to heaven.
