Mr. John Abernathy was born and raised in the Cartersville area and was the youngest of three children. His family remained in the same area throughout his life. He worked as a Deputy for the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office. Soon after, he worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Atco, GA for over twenty years before fully retiring. On June 15, 1992 he married the love of his life and soul mate, Barbara Joyce Stone and remained married for the next twenty-nine years before his passing.
After he retired, John enjoyed spending his time camping, spending time in the mountains, watching western movies, and cooking anything, especially chili. He also served proudly as a Mason with the Euharlee Lodge #457.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Margie Clark; son-in-law, Jimmy Poole
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Abernathy; daughter, Tammy Poole; son, Craig Brown; son, Tim Abernathy; son, David (Tammy) Abernathy; sister, Bobbie Neal; grandchildren, Josh (Christy) Poole, LeAnne Williams, Charity Messer, Callie (Matt) Everett, Katie (Eric) Schumacher, Rhyne (Cami) Abernathy, and Summer (Andy) Garrett; seven great grandchildren, and many loving extended family members and friends to cherish his memory.
A funeral service will be held on June 23, 2021 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Owen Funeral Home and will be officiated by Reverend Dennis Huskins. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 between the hours of six and nine in the evening.
