Mrs. Lipscomb was born October 22, 1926, in Walker County, Lafayette, GA. She
graduated from Berry College, Rome, GA in 1949, where she majored in English and
Music. Jimmye was married to Walter D. Lipscomb at Mt. Berry Chapel
on June 4th, 1950. They were members of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist,
Cartersville.
Mrs. Lipscomb taught school for twenty-eight years beginning at Cass High School and then went to
Cartersville City Schools to teach music. In the beginning years she taught all
grades with much fun and laughter; from the young children's performances to the
high achievements of the high schoolers, she was so proud of her students. They
earned many first place awards in state competitions ranging from soloists, trio,
quartet and piano. Jimmye later worked at Cartersville High School so
she could devote more time to extracurricular work and the students that had
such a love and passion for music.
After retirement from teaching Jimmye became a member of the Cartersville
Garden Club and served as president for a period of time. She remained a
member for many years. She also was a member of the Sam Jones Methodist
Choir and was Director of the Bell Choir.
Mrs. Lipscomb was preceded in death by her parents Horace Shields Hegwood and
Ethel Williams Hegwood of Lafayette, Georgia and a brother Gene Hegwood of
Chamblee, Georgia. She was also preceded in death
by her husband Walter D. Lipscomb, who passed away sixteen days
prior to her death due to a fatal accident. Surviving are daughters Melody
Thacker (Gary Thacker) of Cartersville and Holly Gwilliam (Dan Gwilliam) of
Mesa, AZ. Grandchildren are Dan Thacker, Cary Thacker (Melissa Thacker), Terry
Thacker (Debbie Thacker) of Cartersville; Dr. Sarah Corral (Charles Corral), of
Scottsdale, Arizona. Great grandchildren are Dakota Thacker, Draven Thacker,
Alex Thacker, and Zachary Thacker all of Cartersville, Georgia, and twelve great
grandchildren of whom ten reside in Arizona and two in Colorado.
Mrs. Lipscomb is survived by a brother and three sisters: Conn Hegwood of
Canton, Sue Howel of Rome, Wylene Selman of Summerville, and
Katheryn Pilgrim of Chickamauga, Georgia. On many occasions, the sisters
enjoyed singing for various civic and church activities.
Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m.Wednesday, December 11, at Sam
Jones United Methodist Church with Reverend Kevin Lobello, Reverend
Nena Jones, and Jim Stanley, Director of Music Ministries. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with Hospice Chaplain Keith Guyton.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions made to Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, North Georgia Regional Office, 922 East Morris St., Dalton, GA 30721 or Sam Jones United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m.
Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be Gary Thacker, Dan Gwilliam, Terry Thacker, Dan Thacker,
Hugh Howel and Randy Garbiel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Cary Thacker, Tommy Hall, Tom Akin, Sam
Freeman, Wesley Hann, George Manners and Keith Guyton.
Owen Funeral Home, 12 Collins Drive, Cartersville, is in charge of the
arrangements.
