Janice Thomas Matthews, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Cartersville, Georgia. Janice was born November 25, 1943 in Savannah, Georgia, to Albertus “Bert” Thomas and Louise Brown Thomas. In 1965, she met Jack Matthews and they wed in July of that year, going on to have 2 children, Kaye Matthews and Ben Matthews.
She was a homemaker and loved serving others. For most of her life, she worked tirelessly with the ladies WMU at Cartersville First Baptist Church and was an integral part of the Lottie Moon history collection at CFBC. Janice found pleasure in cooking and people loved to receive one of her famous pound cakes. Janice was a Mother and Grandmother, but most of all she was proud of being “Gigi” to two special Great-Granddaughters.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents, Bert & Louise Thomas; Mother-in-law, Carrie Matthews; her younger Brother, Freddie Thomas. Surviving is her Husband of 57 years, Jack Matthews; Daughter Kaye Matthews of Cartersville, Ga.; Son Ben Matthews (Vanessa Chappell) of Gulfport, MS. Janice has two grandchildren, Robert (Melani) Clements of Cartersville, Ga. and Matthew Clements of Kennesaw, Ga. She has two Great-Grandchildren, Aubree Clements and Kaurie (KK) Clements of Cartersville, Ga., who were the highlights of her life.
Other surviving family members are Nancy (Butch) St. Clair of Toccoa, Ga. and Steve (Alice) Thomas of Deland, FL.; Billy (Barbara) Matthews of Summerville, SC. and DeAnne (Ricky) Thomas of Hampton, Va.; along with several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home on Monday, May 9, 2022 from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga. at 2:30 pm Monday, May 9, 2022.
