Catherine Isabelle (Kitty) Carte, age 90 of Cartersville, GA passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. She was born in East Gulf, WV on April 2, 1930 to the late William Francis Clark and Golda Freeman Clark.
Kitty is preceded in death by her husband, Jerald Lynn Carte, and her son-in-law Perry Waits. She is survived by her son, Alan (Cindy) Carte; Daughters, Jana (Gray) Lindsey, Mary Anne Waits; grandchildren Jason Carte, Melissa Shaw, Justin Carte, Matt (Jenny) Lindsey, Jake Lindsey; great-grandchildren, Hannah Shaw, Ryan Shaw; niece, Mari (Jim) Smith; several great nephews and niece.
Kitty was a graduate of Charleston General Hospital Nursing Program. She opted for a life of marriage and family, and mostly used her nursing skills for the benefit of her family and neighbors. After moving to Cartersville in 1965, she became well known for her volunteer work in the community and was able to use her nursing background volunteering at the Tonsmeire Community Clinic in its early days.
Kitty was a 55-year member of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church and loved her Marco Sunday school class. Any time the church called for volunteers Kitty was ready and willing, with Meals on Wheels being a particular passion. Ringing a bell for the Salvation Army was a tradition at Christmas.
From the early days of the establishment of the Community Church Shop she was a member of the Board of Directors and a tireless volunteer, working 30 hours a week at the age of 87.
Kitty was also very active with the Red Cross for many years, serving on the Board of Directors. She was active in disaster relief, responding to families burned out of their homes, and ran a shelter in the fellowship hall of Sam Jones Church during the blizzard of 1993. She volunteered at Red Cross blood drives every month until the age of 88.
Kitty was recognized for her contributions to the community by receiving numerous awards. In 1996, the American Legion of Bartow County named her as a finalist for Citizen of the Year. In 2002, Bartow Women at Work named her Woman of Excellence (Star of the Past). She was also recognized by the United Way for outstanding leadership and service to people of the community.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Kevin Lobello officiating. The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home on Saturday, April 3, 2021 from 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm.
