Son of Margaret E. Vittetau (Knecht) and John Eugene Vittetau he was born December 21, 1933 in Hartford City, IN. He spent most of his formative years in Indianapolis, IN. and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1951. Bob was a veteran serving his country for eight years as a member of the Indiana National Guard. Following high school he worked for The Standard Oil Company where he met the love of his life, Hertha Catherine Fickes, and the two were married in April 1956. He later found a career working with Western Electric in Indianapolis where he remained for 30+ years. During that time he and Hertha raised two children, a son, Michael, and a daughter, Laura.
During his retirement years he and Hertha enjoyed camping while traveling to many parts of the United States. They moved from Indianapolis to a community in Cherokee Village, Arkansas where they stayed for 22 years and Bob picked up the game of golf with many close friends. He was a devoted member the St. Michael Catholic Church. He also served his community as a member of the Cherokee Village Waterworks Facilities Board of Sharp County, Arkansas. In 2015 he and Hertha returned to Carmel, IN to be parishioners at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church.
He was preceded to heaven by his wife Hertha in 2015. He is survived by his son Michael and wife Lynn of Carmel, IN, his daughter Laura Winter and husband Jim, two sisters; Martine Billman and Judith Trumpey, both of Indianapolis, five grandchildren: Cara Elizabeth (Vittetau) Mehlon her husband Chad, James Robert Vittetau and wife Quinn, Thomas Earl Vittetau and wife Kelly, Emeline Marie (Vittetau) Falk and husband Kyle, John Matthew McConnell, and Nicholas James Winter. He has four great-grandchildren; Ava Rae Elizabeth, Ethan Michael George, Amelia Jane, and Alexandra Katherine as well as many nephews and nieces, grand nephews and nieces.
Robert was a very faith filled and beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and his gentle, loving, prayerful manner will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Robert’s name can be made to the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN).
Visitation for Bob will be from 10:00 - 11:00am on Friday, November 8th at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Recitation of the Rosary at 10:30am followed by a Memorial Mass for Bob at 11:00am. Inurnment will be at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
