With great sadness we announce that Anita Mary Colby passed away at the age of 100 on October 30, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan, the daughter of the late Angela and Anthony Winters. After graduating from Saginaw High School, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. In 1946, she married Edward and continued working until her children were born.
Anita’s family and faith were most important to her. She was a wonderful and devoted mother who enthusiastically supported her children’s activities. Throughout her marriage, Anita handled 17 household moves to various cities in Michigan, Massachusetts, New York, Indiana and Florida.
She enjoyed playing her piano daily, entertaining, cooking, reading and cheering on her favorite baseball and football teams. She was an accomplished musician, excellent golfer and exceptional bridge player, but will be remembered most as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. She taught us how to lead a joyful life filled with kindness, good will and gratitude. Her strong faith guided her throughout her life.
Anita lived a full and active life. She faced all of life’s challenges, especially the loss of her beloved Edward in 2009 and any physical difficulties, with grace, good cheer and perseverance, always determined to overcome them. She was strong, patient and optimistic and had the smile of an angel.
We were very fortunate to have her with us for so many years. We will miss her beyond measure, but she will live on in our hearts.
Anita is survived by her loving daughters Susan Colby Katz (Jeffrey) and Nancy Nance (Gary); grandchildren Nicholas Nance (Brittany) and Taylor Nance; great grandson Oliver Nance; nephews Joseph Kruska (Lori), Kenneth Kruska (Jayne), Thomas Kruska, Joseph Winters (Alva) and Daniel Winters (Lynda); nieces Christine Kruska (D Locklear) and Kathleen Winters; great nephews and great nieces; and grand-dog Chester. In addition to her parents and her husband, Edward Colby, she was predeceased by her sister Marie Kruska and brothers William and Joseph Winters.
We are so grateful for the physicians, nurses and all medical personnel who provided excellent care with great kindness and compassion. The family also wishes to send heartfelt thanks to Anita’s wonderful neighbors, who truly exemplify the meaning of friendship.
The funeral Mass will be on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 11 am at St. Dominic Parish, Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 4735 W Michigan Avenue, Saginaw, Michigan. Prior to the Mass, visitation will begin at 10 am. Inurnment will follow at St. Andrew Cemetery.
In remembrance of Anita’s life, she wished those so inclined to raise a joyful toast in her memory. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the charity of your choice.
