Helen Louise Freeman was born on August 8th,1928 (per her birth certificate) or August 9th (according to the driver's license she obtained 50 plus years after her birth) to Charles Freeman and Jessie Moore Freeman in Harlem Hospital in New York, NY. She graduated from the New York City education system in 1945. In the early 1970’s she went on to enroll in the Manpower Job Readiness program to prepare for her career in clerical work at the office of Sears and Roebuck. She later went on to pursue a career with the New York State Department of Mental Health, where she was affectionately called "radar" because she could locate staff anywhere in the office. She remained there until she retired in 1990.
At an early age, Helen gave her life to Jesus Christ. She surrounded herself with women who were leaders in the Faith, who mentored her, and helped to build her foundation in Christ. She modeled this life for her three daughters. She stressed to them the importance of knowing scripture and how to pray. She led her children in daily devotions, home worship, and encouraged them to be active participants in youth ministry. She was an original member of Ephesus from 1962 (which is now known as Mount Olivet Gospel Church Inc.). She had a love for God's word and earned her credentials at the Bethel Bible Institute, in which she graduated. She then went on to teach bible classes, where the fear of the Lord was instilled in some of her students-she was more bark than bite. She was ordained as an evangelist and preached at her home church and abroad. She would tell anyone she was the oldest member of Mount Olivet, but not in age!
Helen was faithful to God with the assignments He gave her. She served people behind the scenes and didn't look for the applause of men. She led many to the Lord with a simple invitation to church or with a kind deed. She visited the sick and shut in, she was a faithful friend, she was someone who saw your potential, and encouraged you to do your best.
Helen was known for her style, fashion and her candor. She could give you a compliment and shade all at the same time. If she was preaching and she didn't get any response, "amen wall" would be her reply! If you were eating and didn't offer her any, she would be quick to say, "have some cat or dog!"
There is so much more that could be said but in the words of Helen L Freeman, "you can't tell it all", and "TO GOD BE THE GLORY".
During the early morning hours of March 1, 2024, Helen transitioned from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Jessie Freeman, her only sibling, older sister Vivian Scott, granddaughter Keishayia Freeman, and grandson Khalid Monroe. She leaves to fondly remember her, daughters Michelle Young (Butch), Robbyn Freeman, and Sharon Eiland (Melvin); grandchildren Trevor, Brandon, Shacory, Corbin, Shaina, Jasmine, Keishonnia, and DeAndre; great-grands Chyanne, Sydney, Amaria, Karim, Micah, Kairi, K'halanni, Morocco, K'hataii, and K'hawaii. She leaves to mourn a host of relatives and friends.
She will be greatly missed, but we know that all earthly suffering is over, and we can be comforted in knowing that she is now at rest fully present with the Lord.
