Paul Stanley Barrentine, at 85 years, formerly of Canton, Texas, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 27, 2024, in New Braunfels, Texas. He was born to Farris and Edith Barrentine on August 18, 1939, in Edgewood, Texas. Paul was the third born into his family, with two older brothers, Ferman and Allen (deceased after birth). His sister and brother, Margaret and Joe Oscar, would come later.
He grew up in Canton, Texas, and emerged into adulthood with a variety of stories from his childhood such as: shooting bee-bee guns, running from bees, crawling through culverts, wrecking his Dad’s new car, and tossing cherry bombs under moving vehicles on the road. He was very industrious and had an early paper route as a youth. He met the love of his life, Toni Lynn Murphrey Barrentine, working at her uncle’s store as a soda jerk.
Upon graduation from high school, he attended Tyler Junior College and then went on to the University of Texas in Austin to become a cherished Texas Longhorn. He married Toni on July 2, 1960, and they started their lives together in Austin, eventually welcoming the addition of their first daughter, Teri. Shortly after graduation from pharmacy school, they moved to Sherman, TX, where they had their second daughter, Jill. In this season, he began attending a church where one Sunday, he felt called to dedicate his whole life to Jesus, no matter where that might take him and his family. This led him to Southwestern Theological Seminary where he earned his Master of Divinity and prepared for ministry. With so much learning going on, they decided to grow their family and soon their third daughter, Julie, arrived. While on the mission field in Warren, Ohio, he pastored a church for six years. It was there he welcomed their fourth daughter, Kristen. Shortly thereafter, the family returned to Canton and became deeply embedded in life in Canton.
In Canton, Paul was highly involved in church life at First Baptist Church. He also returned to pharmacy work and acquired Cedar Creek Pharmacy in Seven Points. He used his pastoral knowledge to love his customers and community. He and Toni taught and mentored many couples and invested in the lives of those whom the Lord brought their way. His love of young couples really inspired his joy and faith. While in Canton, Paul became a father-in-law, and eventually a grandfather. He loved each new member with pride and delight.
After long deliberation and prayer, he and Toni moved to New Braunfels to live closer to two of his daughters for more support as they were aging. Unexpectedly, shortly after their move, his wife of 56 years went to be with Jesus. Grieved, he started a new life in a new home and a new community. He received unexpected blessings of living life daily with family and joining a new church. He lived a full life serving others and cultivating deep, loving friendships in a short period of time. Paul is most known for his intentionality in making each person he met feel valued by calling them by name, recalling details of their life, asking heartfelt questions, sharing his great love for Jesus and being a prayer warrior for all.
Paul is preceded in death by his wife, Toni. He is survived by his daughters Teri (Ross Flynn), Jill (Ron Hammer), Julie (Ruel Lindenau) and Kristen (Danny Fought), and their families. Ashton and Nathan Jaramillo, Juston and Clarissa Flynn, Audrey and Kolton Bailey, Sterling Fought, Merrill and Fletcher Myers, Annika Fought, Karoline Jacobs, Haley Paige Hammer (deceased), Matthew Jacobs, Tristen Fought, Daniel Fought, and great grandchildren, Nolan and Aly Jaramillo, and Shepherd Bailey.
