Son of the late Rose (Jacobs) and Jack Liss, Herb was the beloved and devoted husband of Rayna (Tarter) Liss with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. He was the devoted and loving father of Brian Liss of Randolph and Andrew Liss, PhD and his wife Jennifer Mertz, PhD of Medford. He was the loving Grandpa to his twin grandsons, Benjamin and Adam. Herbert was the brother of the late Robert H. Liss, PhD and his surviving wife, Lois Liss. He was uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Herbert was born in Boston and grew up in the West End and Dorchester. He was a proud United States Army veteran of the Korean conflict. While stationed in Germany, he had the opportunity to visit many parts of Europe. Herb enjoyed talking about memories of his adventures. Upon his return, he joined his father in the Liss Sign Company and became sole owner years later. He was a talented hand lettering sign painter. Retirement was not in his plans. He was very active and always on the “go”. He was an avid golfer and bowler and a fan of all Boston sports teams. He enjoyed keeping up with our country’s politics and took great joy in solving crossword puzzles in ink.
Herbert was always ready to tell a joke and his humor was experienced by many. He lived a long, full life and will be remembered by his loved ones for his active and creative mind as well as his generous and loving spirit. His support and love for his family were limitless. Herb enjoyed sharing his life with a dog and there was a special place in his heart for his miniature schnauzer fur baby, Riley.
