Evelyn Baker Lang, of Sharon, Massachusetts, died peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 28, 2024. A beacon of light, Evelyn was beloved by everyone who knew her for her compassion, her brilliance, her inclusivity and warmth. She was an example of how to live a life with grace and resilience.
Born to immigrant parents, Paul and Shirley Baker, in the Bronx, Evy, as she was known, was a star student. She graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Queens College at age 19. Evy had a long career at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Newton as a science teacher and middle school director. She pursued graduate studies in Education at Harvard University and Lesley University, from which she received a Ph.D. at age 65, going on to a second career in educational consulting. In addition to inspiring students of all ages as an innovative educator, Evelyn served countless volunteer roles at Temple Israel of Sharon. She influenced thousands of students, who even now, express how important she was in their lives
She fell in love with Ronald Lang just before her Sweet 16th Birthday. Evy and Ron enjoyed 67 years of a love-filled marriage, moving from their native New York City to Pennsylvania, Manchester, Connecticut, and finally to Sharon where they lived for over 50 years. Evelyn and Ron raised three daughters: Debby Saltzman, Beth Golub, and Carry Aluia. Evy welcomed their spouses into the family, John, Andy, and Joe, and was the proud grandmother to eight grandchildren: Ilanna, Rachel, and Jeffrey Saltzman, Abby and Milo Golub, and Rosella, Isabel, and Marcus Aluia.
She relished hosting large groups of family and friends who would gather for holidays and lively weekend meals at her home, where she’d prepare huge spreads of family favorites. Evelyn was a loyal and attentive friend, from the Connecticut Mishpachah to the Temple Israel chavera, the Juliet group and neighbors and dear friends from her career and childhood. She had a unique ability to ask thoughtful questions and made people feel special and seen; she was an incredible listener.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 2 PM at Temple Israel Sharon, 125 Pond Street, Sharon. Interment will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon.
