Marilyn Palmer Jones, age 91, died Thursday, February 2, 2023, in Moss Beach, California.
Marilyn was born in Murray, Salt Lake County, Utah on May 22, 1931, to Clarence Leroy (1905-
1987) and Pearl Maretta Jensen (1910-1987) Palmer. She was the first of four children: Marilyn
Palmer Jones (1931-2023), Delano Leon (1933-2003), Pearlene Palmer Warner (1937-living),
and Ann Palmer Rasmussen (1943-2022). She graduated from South High School, in Salt Lake
City, Utah, in 1949.
Marilyn married the love of her life, William Dean Jones, in the Salt Lake City Temple of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 5, 1950. Together, they raised their
five children in Canoga Park, California. They now have a beautiful posterity of 30 grandchildren
and 48 great-grandchildren with one more coming any day! They were together for 68 years of a
happy marriage, and Marilyn has missed her sweetheart dearly for the last four years. They are
now having their reunion in heaven!
Marilyn grew up in West Jordan, Utah, where she loved living on a farm and playing with her
aunts and uncles just older than she was. She had many fond memories of playing in the barn
and herding the cows. She moved to Salt Lake City with her parents and attended Jr. High and
High School. She met Bill when she was 15-years-old. They married after his mission and
settled in Salt Lake City. They lived in Dugway and then moved to San Fernando, California.
After moving to Canoga Park, she enjoyed fixing up the house and being a mom. When her
younger kids were a little older, she helped many people with decorating their weddings. She
soon decided to start her wedding reception service. She was always fantastic at hosting a get
together. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker for more than just her own children;
together, she and Bill welcomed many young women into their home. Marilyn’s unconditional
love and acceptance helped the women through hard times and created life-long relationships
with them.
Marilyn served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life. She held
many callings, including: junior Sunday school coordinator, Primary chorister, Primary activity
girls' leader, Young Women's leader in her ward and stake, Relief Society ward president,
compassionate service leader, and other callings as a counselor and teacher. She served in the
Jacksonville Florida Mission with Bill and a second mission with the hearing impaired in Los
Angeles. They also worked as temple workers in the Los Angeles Temple. She was her stake's
public affairs director and helped in the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Group. She had a strong
testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and did her best to live as Christ would want
her to.
Marilyn was a talented seamstress. She sewed many Easter and Christmas outfits for her
children and made intricate quilts for each of her grandchildren for wedding gifts. She crocheted
hats and booties for grandbabies and great-grandbabies; and during her last 8 years, she
crocheted and donated over 600 hats for the homeless and fire victims. She learned to play golf
when Bill retired and actually got 2 Holes in One. She loved to cook and enjoyed inviting people
over for dinner often. Her menus were always a hit. She loved to sing and was also an avid
reader and gardener.
She was a woman who loved her heritage and wanted to pass on wonderful traditions. She and
Bill traveled many places, but they especially enjoyed their time getting to know extended family
in Holland. She passed on beautiful heritage gifts to her children and grandchildren and started
many of her own new traditions like quilts, wedding china, porcelain dolls, glass figurines,
Christmas stockings, ornaments, baby showers in a box, and more for her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Marilyn’s life was her family. She was a loving mother and then a doting grandma and greatgrandma. She remembered every birthday, Christmas, new baby, wedding, and more. Her love
poured into each Facebook comment, message, and phone call when she couldn't be with
family in person. She looked forward to each time someone would visit and was always ready
with cookies and a card game. Her innate optimism and unconditional acceptance left everyone
who met her better for it.
She is loved by many and will be missed by her children: Jarilee (Mark) Chidester, Warren Dean
(Lynn) Jones, Bradley Royce (Vicki) Jones, Craig Leroy (Mary-deceased, Kelli), and Eric
Matthew (Erin) Jones; her 30 grandchildren and 48 and counting great-grandchildren; and the
many others that knew and loved her throughout her extended family, church, and community.
